Asclepias tuberosa

Butterfly Weed

Asclepias tuberosa, commonly known as Butterfly weed, is a species of milkweed well known for its bright, large clusters of orange flowers. Asclepias tuberosa prefers well-draining soils in open, sunny habitats where it can naturalize by self-seeding. Butterfly weed usually grows to 1 - 2' tall, forming dense clumps and numerous flowers. Many pollinators are attracted to butterfly weed, including butterflies, native bees, moths, and hummingbirds. Asclepias tuberosa is a host species for the Monarch, the Gray Hairstreak, and the Queen Butterfly.
