Symphyotrichum cordifolium

Blue Wood Aster

Symphyotrichum cordifolium, also known as Blue wood aster, is a native late summer to early fall blooming perennial found in moist, shady woodlands and sunny woodland edges alike. Typically growing 2-3' tall, Symphyotrichum cordifolium blooms from September through late October. Their flowers are numerous and small with light blue petals which surround a pale yellow to purple center. Their leaves are a rich green, numerous, lancolate and toothed. Symphyotrichum cordifolium attracts numerous beneficial insects, including many native bees, butterflies, skippers, and beetles. Symphyotrichum is a keystone flowering perennial, supporting over 100 different invertebrate species.
